Project Overview
Project Summary
In this project, I was working on Phase 3 of building a mobile app for students to practice educational skills. This project is still ongoing and has not been made public to the general market. During this phase, I worked as a UX Writer to develop copy for the app that users will interact with for lessons, guided, and independent practice.
Role and Duration
My role as the UX Writer consisted of developing and/or content needed to push the project further along. This consisted of supporting the UX research team with developing consent forms and waivers to begin usability testing with participants. This also consisted of creating lessons plans that are tailored to users of this app. The duration of this project phase was from May 2024 to August 2024 lasting around 11 weeks.
The Problem
The problem that consisted weren’t yet established from usability testing and research although there were problems that occurred during designing content and the app. It was important to make sure the app was engaging and had the tools necessary to suite the needs of the specific audience.
Goals
The client is trying to achieve and create an app that suites the mathematical needs of students elementary age with development disabilities. The goal is for the user to gain practice of mathematical skills in the way that best supports them. Product goals consisted of making sure the app could be facilitated independently by a user of 11 years or younger. This app is also going to be open to students who do not have the development disability.
Design Process
The process consisted of working with the research team to first gain information on how to create an engaging and helpful learning experience for students with the development disability. We used the strategies provided by research on how to support students and began ideating on lesson topics then developing the lesson plans. We started out with figuring out which topic to start with and developing questions based off that subject matter. We found that during this phase of the project, it was best to work with a topic that design could develop in the short period of time.
Moving forward, I created a lesson plan that included direct instruction, guided practice, and independent practice for a specific math topic. I was responsible for developing all questions and language that will be used on the app. I provided visuals for the design team as well.
